Please watch this film it's only 12 minutes long. It's a short documentary called "Up There". It documents the dying business of hand painted building ads. Vinyl ads have made their business nearly obsolete with the exception of major markets like New York and LA.

The cinematography and score are wonderful.

Gone are the days of such craftsmanship.

Carmicheal Gallery - Re-Creation II

L.A. based Carmicheal Gallery’s first US East Coast exhibition "Re-Creation II" opened last Friday at the offices of Ogilvy & Mather in New York City and features amazing work by nine of the gallery’s artists. Spread across seven floors of Ogilvy's beautifully renovated Chocolate Factory, the artwork and spectacular site-specific installations will be open for public viewing until July 31st.

This is a really exciting exhibition featuring Will Barras, Simon Birch, Boxi, Ethos, Mark Jenkins, Labrona, Aakash Nihalani, Nina Pandolfo and WK Interact. These are amongst the world's best emerging contemporary artists.

Peter Funch

Danish photographer, Peter Funch, who lives and works in New York City has created a photo series called “Babel Tales” which consists of pictures of people passing New York City street corners.

Every photo is an edit of several photo’s he took at exactly the same spot in a period of two weeks. He then picked dozens of samey pedestrians — smokers, kids, dog walkers, people with flowers, security staff, yawners — and Photoshopped them into the same frames to create the Babel Tales series. Its quite odd to see a New York where everyone wears red or everyone carries a brolly. Thanks to Sweet Station.

Kenji Hirata

Kenji Hirata is a New York based painter from Nagasaki, Japan. In his paintings, he incorporates water, fire, metal, wood, and soil, fusing a complex narrative out of the five elements. Hirata moves confidently between compositions of layered density and vast areas of open fields and clean forms. In his words, his work "attempts to reveal something deep within the spirit of things." He is guided by the Buddhist idea that emptiness is everything eternal. He says his work engages in the world and attempts to reveal something deep within the spirit of things.

Hirata is an artist who creates work in an impressive variety of situations, from huge colourful public murals, to more personal paintings, from animated works for film to illustrations for books. Both his solo and collaborative works have demonstrated Hirata to be a well respected, innovative, and important member of the New York art and film communities including the Barnstormers.

The Barnstormers group came together after an encounter in Cameron, North Carolina, USA., in 1999 where they painted houses, tractors and miscellaneous agricultural equipment. Although, the artistic expressions they turn to are varied, this group experience gave them a taste for murals of great scale, which they continue to create.

Hirata has created large scale murals in public spaces in New York, Miami and Tokyo.

Legends bomb the Bronx

When LA based Tattoo artist Mr Cartoon took a trip to New York last week to visit Old School Graffiti legend Cope2 it wasn’t long before, with a little help from Sen2, the spray cans came out.

Cope2 is from South Bronx and has been painting since 1978/79. He has an international reputation and is also one of the most known users of "wildstyle" graffiti, a style which originated in the Bronx. His signature or throwup is now so recognised it has been used by brands such as Levis and Adidas and was even used in the background in the film Shrek the Third.

Sen2 is originally from Puerto Rico but now lives in the Bronx where he has been writing graffiti since the early eighties. With a reputation as a great graphic artist he now owns and runs a graffiti store/gallery Da Bakery in New York.

Mr Cartoon started out in the early eighties as an LA based graffiti writer but soon moved into tattooing. His work is based on a style that developed in US prisons but was refined by Jack Rudy in the seventies. He has since found his calling in hip-hop culture through the creation of tattoo art, magazine illustrations, album covers, and backdrops for music videos, TV shows, and the trunks of low riders. His intricate art is inscribed on the bodies of the Goodie Mob, Mobb Deep, Cypress Hill, Method Man, Red Man, Limp Bizkit, Eminem, Infamous Mobb, Meeno, Xzibit, Treach and Sir Jinx.
